Today is the 30th anniversary of the compact disc. The first CD went on sale in Japan. They took music into the digital era and stayed on top for almost three decades. They have been overtaken by digital downloads and MP3 players. Here are a few 'fun facts' about Compact Discs.
- The first CD to officially go on sale was Billy Joel's 52nd Street, in Japan in 1982.
- The first CD player available for sale was the Sony CDP-101. It retailed for around $900 and was released on October 1 , 1982.
- ‘Born in the USA' by Bruce Springsteen was the first CD in history to be manufactured in the United States for commercial release when CBS Records opened their CD manufacturing plant in Indiana in 1984 - all other CD's were imported from Japan up until this point.
