Recently, a 3-year-old girl realized her father needed emergency medical care and walked two blocks to the nearest fire station for help, saving her father's life and making headlines in the process. The fire station was on a route that the family walked every day and her parents had made a habit of pointing out fire and police stations as safe havens in case of an emergency.
It got me thinking, what should we be teaching our kids about safety, and at what age? Things like their full names and their parent's names, their address and phone number, and how to dial 911? What do you do if you get lost in a store? What if a stranger approaches you in the store, or while playing outside? Which strangers are safe to approach if you need help?
When you think about it, there are so many things they need to learn and we should start teaching them as soon as we think they can understand. At what age did you start teaching your kids these lessons? What did you feel was most important to teach them?
