A 3-year-old boy, in England, decided he didn't want to stay at preschool and took off on his own. According to Samantha Aldridge said the school called to let her know he was doing fine. Then, about two hours later, her son, Alfie, showed up at her front door. She said in order to get home from his preschool, which is about 10 minutes away, he walked out of his school building, went over a 3-foot wall and crossed a busy street.

"Thankfully, I was home to answer the door," Aldridge said. "It makes me feel sick to think of what could have happened. She said when she walked back to the school, the staff had not even noticed he was missing! The school apologized, but Aldridge enrolled Alfie and his 2-year-old sister, Lexi, in another nursery school that has higher security.

This story had me lying awake last night wondering how safe my kids are at school. I had a friend who's son was missing for about 20 minutes from his preschool and she was livid. She not only had to worry about how he was doing without her, but if he would run away or go missing. She said she tried to tell herself everything was fine, but she could never get the thought he'd go missing out of her mind. All those normal thoughts sounded petty to her.

Most of us have those normal and stressful thoughts the first time we drop our kids off at preschool. I felt super guilty for leaving my boys at preschool when they were two and a half. I told myself they would be fine, the teacher enjoys her job and wants him to have a fun experience. It's a stage, a part of life that kids have to go through. They need to learn how to socialize and be around other children. Leaving our kids with a new caretaker is always stressful, but it is necessary. Hopefully, they won't run away and they'll bring home a macaroni art project that lets us know they actually thought about us in the middle of all the fun they were having.
