A New York man who had been called the nation's "Most Wanted Deadbeat Parent" owed $1.2 million in child support payments. Robert Sand spent over 10 years running from his three children and two former wives in an effort to avoid paying support. He has finally admitted to his guilt.
He finally admitted to fleeing the country due to arrest warrants in 2000 and 2002. He was caught in November trying to enter the Philippines without proper identification. He was identified by the US Department of Health and Human Services' website for Child Support Enforcement as the "most wanted deadbeat parent." The website was created to get the public's help to find parents who owe child support.
"Today, the defendant has admitted to abandoning his responsibilities to the children he helped bring into this world, and to leaving the country to do so," US Attorney, Loretta Lynch said. "Neither court orders nor the familial bond meant anything to him as he fled to avoid his obligations." He could be imprisoned for up to four years.
Do you have problems collecting child support? Do you think the government could be more harsh on these kinds of offenders?
