Our newest Mom on the Move is Lorrie Urbaniak. She is the owner of an awesome website, Chicks Play Sports. We're excited that she's sharing her views on mothering with us.
Tell us about your family:
I have 4 wonderful kids, 2 boys, 19 and 18 and twin girls that are 13. I have been a single parent for the past 10 years. We have had a blast! There have been lots and lots of sports, games, and practices at our house. Both my boys will be playing football up at UNC next fall. Very exciting!
Tell us about your business:
Chicks Play Sports (CPS) was created out of necessity! I found that there was a lack of places where women and girls could shop for their athletic apparel. Currently, we are an online store. We offer products that are designed with the female athlete in mind. We have uniforms, practice gear, and our own line of Chicks Play Sports apparel. It is a 1 stop shop for the female athlete. www.chicksplaysports.com
What is the most rewarding thing about being a mom?
Since my kids are older now, I think it is watching them become young adults, and seeing how they handle difficult situations. I just love how I can see them grow and mature, and learn about life. They are all very positive kids and have a great outlook on life in general.
What is the most rewarding thing about being a mom on the move?
It is an honor to me to be a mom on the move! I feel like I have been on the move for many years now! I have worked hard at my new business and it is nice to have some recognition for the work that I have put into it. It is a great lesson for my kids to learn from as well. Put your mind to it, and you can do anything!
What is your biggest challenge being a mom?
When there are 4 of them and 1 of me... Well it can be many things! I always wanted them to know that they were each loved and special in different ways. That sometimes took extra time and energy. It was more challenging with my girls who are twins. I wanted them to be their own persons and have their own separate identity. One thing I didn't do was compare any of them.
What are some of your mom shortcuts or tips you could share with us?
Lists! I made lists for shopping, household chores, places to go etc. I planned ahead most of the time. I like to be organized, and the seemed to help when I had 4 kids going in 4 directions. When days seem overly chaotic and like they will never end, remember that they do eventually end, and tomorrow is a new day!
What is your favorite book for kids or teens?
Over the years, I have read many books to my kids! The books that stick out the most are any Richard Scary books, (my boys loved them) and any Disney book that had a princess or two in it for the girls.
What is your favorite adult book now?
I am not sure that I have favorite; I think it changes as I do! Right now, I love reading books on other successful entrepreneurs.
