Julie Colangelo is our latest Mom on the Move! She is an active business woman and mother of two. She agreed to let us in on a little part of her life.
Tell us about your family:
I married my soul mate 16 years ago. We have 2 children, one for each hand. We make it a point to have "date night" each week. Even if it's a hike or dinner and a movie....we make time for US. We have a daughter who is 10 years old and a son who is 12 years old. My son enjoys playing competitive soccer and my daughter sings and likes to dance. We all love the outdoors. We like to hike, backpack, snowboard and more! Colorado is our favorite place to live. You can't beat the sunny days and interesting weather! I'm a native and will never move anywhere else!
Tell us about your business:
I've directed child development soccer programs for 10 years now. It's definitely my passion. After realizing how much I enjoy seeing how I and my coaches benefit the kids' lives, I decided to open up my own soccer business called SOCCER BUDDIES. I am a local company and have had great success in my community. Soccer Buddies is a child development soccer program for kids ages 15 months through 12 years. We use soccer as a tool to teach kids about life, physical fitness, how to interact with one another and much more! We start them at 15 months to develop their agility, balance, coordination, color recognition, socialization, etc. I put my kids in the program and I swear by it. I really enjoy working with my coaches and working with the kids. It's so neat to see how excited they get when they see their coach! As coaches, we strive to be role models for these growing kids! All of my coaches LOVE their job and LOVE working with kids! Not only do my coaches know soccer, but they know kids! We have the best coaches in town!
What is the most rewarding thing about being a mom:
Well it's tough to narrow it down to just one because being a mom is so rewarding every day! Waking up seeing my children each day is a reward! If I had to choose one thing, it would be witnessing the way your children behave without you hovering over them. When I see my child treat another child with amazing empathy, it makes me feel like I'm teaching them the right things and helping them to grow into the best little people they can!
What is the most rewarding thing about being a mom on the move?
I would have to say being able to have a healthy balance between work, activities and family. My job is very rewarding, but so is having down time with the family!
What is your biggest challenge being a mom?
Slowing things down and making time for the important things. It's so easy to get caught up in rushing my son to soccer practice, driving my daughter to the Sky Sox Stadium to sing the national anthem, and then owning my own local business. It's tough to juggle everything!
What are some of your mom shortcuts or tips you could share with us?
I would have to say that I LIVE by LOVE AND LOGIC! It's worked wonders in our household. The kids feel so much better in life because they are making choices that effect them directly so it takes the power struggle out of it. A shortcut would be if you are really tired one night, just go to Whole Foods and let the kids pick out a healthy dinner! Sometimes it's necessary!
What is your favorite book for kids or teens?
Right now we are reading the Boxcar children. The kids love it!
What is your favorite adult book?
I don't really read or have time to read....but when I do, it's usually the Love and Logic manual! :)
