School lunches isn't always easy—kids can be picky, changing their minds every day even! With a little creativity, you can make healthy, affordable and fun lunches that will always get eaten!
- Theme lunches: pick a theme and center the whole lunch around it. Ideas are:
- Mexican themed-Mexican pizza with fried beans, cheese, tomatoes on a tostada; exotic fruit like papaya and mango; chocolate pudding with a hint of cinnamon; tortilla chips and guacamole
- Color-themed lunches-choose a color like orange and send in orange-colored foods-orannge slices; orange bell peppers with hummus; cheddar cheese; butterscotch pudding.
- Shape-themed lunches-choose a shape like circles: cut your sandwich with a cookie cutter into a circle; melon balls; cheese cut into circle, cucumber slices.
- Freeze grapes to help act as an ice pack, plus they're yummy to eat slightly frozen!
- Make pinwheels: use cream cheese or flavored cream cheese and spread on a tortilla or wrap. Add deli meat and cheese, then top with spinach and roll. Slice into 1" pieces.
- Homemade trailmix: have your kids help you select dried fruit (and nuts if allowable at their school), add some pretzels, dried coconut, carob or chocolate pieces and mix!
- Make a yogurt dipping sauce to send with fruit-mix 1 jar of marshmallow cream and 1 package of cream cheese, or 1 package of instant vanilla pudding mix, 8oz sour cream, and 1/2 c yogurt. Serve with fruit pieces or fruit skewers.
- Have your kids help you make lunches and give them a couple of options—bananas or strawberries. They'll be more likely to eat it if they help!
- Spread peanut butter (or sunflower seed butter if nuts aren't allowed, or there is an allergy) on a tortilla and put a banana on the side. Roll the banana up for a yummy, unique and healthy "sandwich."
