Eating while I drive isn't something I do often, but occasionally it happens. One town in Illinois is getting ready to ban eating and driving. Their main priority is catching distracted drivers. I can think of a million things that distract me when I'm driving: phone, kids, coffee, radio, the person in the next car, food, just to name a few. According to the Oak Park Police, they're targeting people who eat and drive.
Not only are they thinking of banning eating and drinking behind the wheel, they may ban grooming. That means no more putting on make-up on the way to work or out to dinner while you're driving. One official in Oak Park says it is all about public safety. If this ban is enacted, it will be the first in the nation to ban eating and driving.
I may not like it, but I have to admit banning food could be a good move. My husband eats everything from tacos to sushi while he's driving. We take quite a few road trips every year and eating in the car is part of that. I hate being in the passenger seat while he eats and drives, so I'd be for the ban just to get him out of the driver's seat while he eats. HOWEVER, I think this ban would go too far. I think we already have too many laws that invade our personal lives and this is just another one.
What do you think? Should cities across the country ban eating while driving?
