Georgia will be starting a new program, to regulate day care centers, in January. It will help parents know what is going on at their child's day care center. Centers will be rated on how their teachers are trained, meal plans and education. For the rating program, centers will be rated in five broad categories: qualifications and training of the director and teachers; teacher-to-child ratio; and child health, nutrition and physical activity.

The new system will require schools to have lesson plans and know about educational stadards. Georgia child care directors believe it is important to prepare children for education. Starting in January, daycare centers that participate will receive ratings of good, very good, and excellent. Those scores will be posted on the Bright Starts home page for parents to see. Empoyees of top day care centers will receive finanicial rewards.

Parents and advocates say they welcome the rating sysem. Child care providers also call it a good idea, but say they are somewhat skeptical given the state track record on previous programs designed to raise quality. What do you think of a rating system for day care/child care? Would this make it easier for parents and safer for children?
