A family and community are calling 8-year-old, Malik Gipson, a hero. He used the Heimlich maneuver on his 2-year-old brother, Michael, and saved his life. Michael had a piece of peppermint candy stuck in his throat and was choking for several minutes. Where did he learn the move? He credits a Disney cartoon for teaching him the Heimlich.
The boys' great grandmother, Elaine Pines, said Malik saw that Michael was choking and he acted quickly. "He kept doing it, he kept doing it, and after a while that peppermint went 'choop'!" she said "I said 'oh Malik, there it is, thank you!'" Family members said if they had waited for an ambulance it would have been too late. The Clayton County Fire Department is honoring him for his actions.
Would your child know what to do in case of an emergency like this? Would you? Have you had Red Cross or other First-Aid training?
