Just last week I was writing about a roll-over car accident in Colorado Springs in which a cars eat saved an infant! We were giving props to that mom for following all the tips and rules and literally saving her little girl's life! Now this...5 kids, ranging from age 2 to 13 years-old were killed in a tragic car accident yesterday. The 10 kids and 2 adults were sharing seats and, GASP, there were NO car seats in the entire car!

The dead ranged in age from 2 to 13, the newspaper says. Three of the children were pronounced dead at the scene, and the other two died later, authorities said.

They were apparently on their way to a waterpark when the SUV rolled several times on its way down an encampment and nine of the children were thrown from the car. I cannot even imagine. A day that was supposed to be filled with fun in the sun, turned into every parent's worst nightmare.

It's easy to read this and think, "well of course something like this happened when you pile that many kids into a car, and don't even have car seats," but the reality is, I can see exactly how this happened. Instead of taking 2 cars I'm sure they thought it would be easier and maybe even save on gas to just take one. They may have even removed car seats to fit more kids in the car. This is the sort of thing we used to do all the time when we were growing up in the 1980's and 1990's, when you would still see kids riding in the back of pick-up trucks down the interstate. But this time on this horrible day...we know what happened.

These adults had no intention of something like this happening, but the fact of the matter is WE KNOW BETTER! We don't put kids in the back of pick-up trucks and we definitely don't pile everyone in without car seats or seatbelts. None of us can afford this kind of "convenience." Our children's lives are worth much, much more.
