This eleven-year-old boy from Winchester, VA saved his Mom's life. In July, Amy Costello wasn't feeling well and she and her son, Derek, drove to the hospital. She said she was shaking and losing consciousness. Her son was able to drive the car to the side of the road and call ambulance.
He remained calm and was able to get help to his mother after she passed out. She says, "We were driving just fine, and then something just hit me, and I don't know what it was, I started shaking really bad and sweating profusely."
Derek says, "I had to put it (the car) in park and turn on the emergency lights; then I took my mom's phone and called the ambulance." He was able to remain calm and he tried not to cry. He said, "I tried not to cry, because if I cried and got all nervous, I wouldn't know what to say, so I tried my hardest not to cry."
Amy had some kind of virus and has since recovered. She and the entire community are proud of Derek. He will be given a citizen commendation award for his actions.
It's great to hear stories of kids who keep their cool and are able to help out in tough situations.
