Dear Mama,

I am a single mother with three kids. My oldest son is horrible to his siblings. My house is full of shouting and crying. I have tried to punish him but it makes no difference, it just gets worse. I am at my breaking point. Can you help?

I am so sorry to hear of your situation. Be comforted in the fact you are not alone. It may be that your son is dealing with frustration and just needs to vent. Try this:

• Find a time to sit with him alone and encourage him to share with him the things that push his buttons. Don't try and solve his problems, just listen. He will feel heard. Be empathetic but create a place for him to vent.
• Try to catch your son in the act of being helpful. Acknowledge his behavior and give him a special treat that is just between the two of you. Another option is to let him overhear you talking about his good behavior.
• Keep your cool. Don't add to the drama by getting dramatic.
